Project Name/Title:

Economic Impact Study for Ørsted

Duration:

November 2021 – April 2022

Project Overview:

Opergy, in partnership with Metro Dynamics, delivered an economic impact study for Ørsted, celebrating their ten years of operation in the Humber region. This study aimed to quantify the economic contributions of Ørsted’s investments and activities in the region, highlighting key figures and narratives that showcase Ørsted’s impact on the local community and economy.

Ørsted has made significant investments in the Humber, directly or indirectly contributing £9.5 billion to infrastructure and assets, with additional investments expected to add another £14 billion over the next decade. These investments are primarily related to their offshore wind farms, including Westermost Rough, Race Bank, Hornsea 1, and Hornsea 2. The study also projected the sustaining of at least 760 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs in supply chain companies around the UK, 7,500 in construction roles, and 1,100 roles across the broader economy.

Since beginning their activities at the Port of Grimsby in 2012 with a small base for the Westermost Rough offshore wind farm, Ørsted has expanded significantly. In 2019, they opened the East Coast Hub, the world’s largest offshore wind operations and maintenance centre, supporting six East Coast offshore wind farms. Over the next decade, Ørsted will deliver additional wind farms, contributing 8.6GW of capacity and meeting 17% of the UK Government’s 2030 target of 50GW of offshore wind.

The economic impact study employed best practice methodologies to assess the effects of Ørsted-led investments on local employment and the business environment. It quantified the diffusion of activity through supply chains and the induced effects on the wider economy. The study demonstrated how wind energy in the Humber has transformed the local labour market, creating new skills and sustainable jobs in a coastal economy and providing a source of regional prosperity.

The study also explored Ørsted’s direct investments in local education and training opportunities. These initiatives have provided a route for local young people to enter the dynamic and growing wind energy industry. The impact on the community was captured through interviews and firsthand accounts, showcasing Ørsted’s commitment to social value and sustainable development.
